About 110km inland from Port Elizabeth on the R75 to Graaf-Reinet, is the little town of Kleinpoort. With little more than a petrol station, general dealer and liquor store, this is indeed 'getting away from it all'.

Kleinpoort is situated near the Sundays and Kariega rivers, both good for boating. The Sundays River mouth is home to the highest dunes south of the Namib Desert, and there is a delightful beach at the mouth of the Kariega river.

Kleinpoort lies in the Baviaans Wilderness area which boasts three converging biomes - Karoo, valley bushveld and fynbos - and because of this, over 200 species of bird have been recorded. Nature lovers are treated to a variety of flora, with eye-catching flowering aloes. Botanist William Burchell spent four years exploring and documenting the region's varied species.

Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts can plan day trips from Kleinpoort to numerous national parks and game reserves. Kleinpoort is ideally located to explore the region which is fast developing a reputation as an eco-destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
