Named after Pieter Retief and Gert Maritz, the city of Pietermaritzburg is teeming with the ambience of times gone by.
Most coast-bound visitors whizz through Pietermaritzburg with barely a glance in the rear view mirror, never taking the time to absorb the ambience of this historic city. Next time you are on the N3 treat yourself to perhaps a first or final leg of the Midlands Meander and stay over in one of the broad selection of either a Pietermaritzburg Bed and Breakfast or any other Pietermaritzburg accommodation. Pietermaritzburg hotels and a variety of about 50 restaurants can be investigated for fine foods.
Shopping in and around the little lanes of Pietermaritzburg give the feeling of Victorian London transported wholesale to KwaZulu Natal. Pietermaritzburg is riddled with Victorian architecture which can be found in much of the Pietermaritzburg accommodation guest houses. The Oval cricket ground and Pietermaritzburg City Hall are among the many buildings to visit.
Other places of interest in the Pietermaritzburg area include the nearby Lion Park near Camperdown and the Kwazulu Natal Railway Museum at Mason's Mill.
The annual Dusi Canoe Marathon takes place every Summer starting at the Umsindusi River ( Dusi River). Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Pietermaritzburg is very scarce during this race and should be booked early.
The Comrades Marathon which is run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, attracts runners from around the world who participate in this gruelling 90 km ultra marathon. This is another busy time for Pietermaritzburg accommodation owners who are inundated, especially for Self Catering and Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Pietermaritzburg (as well as Durban).
The nearby Idube Raceway near Camperdown holds regular events for go-karting and motorcycle enthusiasts. Accommodation in Pietermaritzburg is probably a little too far for this event.
Pietermaritzburg Bed and Breakfast review for accommodation in Montrose, Pietermaritzburg

Victoria Country Club Guest House in Montrose, is ideal for Pietermaritzburg accommodation and is situated on the Pietermaritzburg Victoria Country Club golf course, making it the perfect place to stay while busy on the 'greens'. If you still have the energy, there are also tennis courts, squash courts and a swimming pool at this Pietermaritzburg Country Club.
We enjoyed some great meals at the a la carte Egret Restaurant, , or the more relaxed Reggies Bar, with its spacious veranda overlooking the golf course.
This upmarket Montrose Pietermaritzburg bed & breakfast accommodation is ideal for the weekend golfer.
