The picturesque little farming village of Underberg lies in the southern foothills of the Drakensberg range of mountains in the southwest of KwaZulu-Natal.
If you have a four wheel drive vehicle take a visit to the Sani Pass - the third steepest pass in the world - that winds through some of Africa's most spectacular scenery. If you wish to go over the border into Lesotho a passport is necessary for non South African citizens.
About 10 kilometres outside Underberg on the road to Swartberg is the Iris garden at Mount Dragon. This garden is well worth visiting, especially in October and November when the Irises are in bloom.
There is plenty of bird-watching in the Underberg area - a chance to see many species that are only seen on or near to the Berg. The rivers and streams around Underberg offer some of South Africa's best trout fishing. Hiking in the Underberg area can be planned so that hikers can spend the night in either a cave or a mountain hut.
