Weenen - Midlands & Battlefields, KwaZulu Natal, is situated along the banks of the Bushman's River in the heart of the Midlands & Battlefields, between Greytown and Colenso, and almost due North-East of Estcourt.
The small farming town of Weenen, the second oldest European settlement in KwaZulu-Natal, got its name from the Dutch language meaning 'place of weeping', and is named Weenen in memory of the 1838 Voortrekker massacre. Within a year the Battle of Blood River followed, and many of the battles that today typify the KwaZulu Natal, Midlands & Battlefields took place around Weenen.

Because of its long history, the little town of Weenen is full of historical buildings, including the Weenen Voortrekker Homestead Museum and other classic examples of the time. For overnight accommodation in Weenen, you'll find the Owl and Elephant Lodge - Weenen Bed & Breakfast accommodation, close to the Midlands & Battlefields route, the Ladysmith Battlefields route, and the Drakensberg & Surroundings being only an hour or so drive away from Weenen. If you fail to find suitable B&B accommodation in Weenen, or in the case of larger families, Weenen Self Catering accommodation options, then Where to Stay will be able to assist with nearby Estcourt accommodation, Mooi River accommodation and Ladysmith accommodation.

The nearby 5,000ha Weenen Game Reserve allows visitors to enjoy extensive viewing of rhino, giraffe, hyena, jackal, bushbuck, reedbuck, steenbok and porcupine. There are also more than 251 recorded bird species, which can be viewed from two hides overlooking a dam. Through the tree-peppered thorn-veld of the Weenen Game Reserve, the Bushmans River flows through a spectacular gorge. The 30km stretch of river known as 'The Canyon', provides some of the most thrilling Weenen white water rafting in the country. Other activities in the Weenen Game Reserve area include abseiling and Weenen 4x4 trails, horse riding, fishing and rock climbing. See the Where to Stay Weenen website page for info on the Zingela Safari & River Company, who will facilitate your outdoor adventure ... it doesn't get better than this!

Travel time between Durban, KwaZulu Natal and Weenen is approximately three hours on the N3 highway past Pietermaritzburg. If you have the time, a stopover in Howick along the Midlands Meander route is very popular. For overnighters, Howick Bed & Breakfast accommodation is in abundance.
From Howick it's just 35 minutes on the N3 to Mooi River (37.2km south of Weenen), and if you didn't make a stopover in Howick, Mooi River accommodation options are plentiful.
